It's Finished!

Finally, it is finished!  I didn't know if I would be able to
complete this stitchery before Christmas or not with all
my preparations for Christmas.  But, I did it and I am so
excited.

I purchased this kit, "Christmas Treasures Wreath" last year
at my favorite quilt shop.  It is from
rosaliequinlandesigns.typepad.com  I knew I didn't have
time before Christmas, but figured I had all this year to work
on it.  But, I procrastinated as usual.  However, I did finish it a
week before Christmas!

I just love all the details in the wreath.  I chose to frame it
instead of mount in on a canvas board as she suggested.

Now maybe I can get my snowman runner finished to
put out in January!

First Stitching Project

Yesterday my five year old grandson decided he was tired of
weaving potholders on the loom and wanted to do something
different.  He noticed some stitchery I was working on and
asked if he could try that.

While I traced the shape of a Christmas tree on muslin, he
picked out some green embroidery thread.  He couldn't wait
to get started and I decided we'd just doing a simple running
stitch for his first attempt.

He had such a good time "stitching" and was so proud
of his tree.

He did not want to make it into anything---just wanted
to hang it on his wall.

I'm so proud of him sticking with it and finishing
it.  Maybe we'll stitch a snowman next and make it into
a small pillow---that is if he wants to do more "stitching."

A Few Little Gifts

It has been awhile since I last posted.  Have been keeping
busy trying to get things made for Christmas.  Decided this
year I wanted to get back to making more of my gifts.  It has
been a lot of fun and doing many of them with my daughter
has been really special.  Because I am making a change in
my lifestyle and dropping some unwanted pounds, I chose
not to do any baking this year.  So everything has been
sewn, stitched, knitted, etc.

Thought I'd share a few things I've been doing:

I made four of these table toppers or wall hangings,
depending on how the recipients wanted to use them.
They we really fun and easy to do.  The hand quilting
was the hardest part.  They were given out early so they
could be enjoyed through the month.  The balance of
their gifts will come on Christmas Day.

My daughter and I made a dozen or so of these banners
for friends -- Again delivered early in the month.

I have mine hanging over my bedroom window.  It makes
me happy every time I look at it.

Made this little stitchery from http://www.red-brolly.com
I chose to put it in a frame rather use it as a Christmas
label.

I have also got hooked on knitting these ruffled scarfs.
They work up in just a few hours and are all the rage
around here.

These are just a few things I've been having fun making.
Will post some more tomorrow or the next day.

Can You Help Me?

I have recently had my nephew help me with my
computer which was having some issues. And now
when I go to print my page size, scaling that was set
to "none" is gone and I don't know how to get it
back.

As I recall, there was someone's blog that told how
to set this.  I don't remember who it was so if there
is anyone that can help with directions, I would
appreciate it.

Even when I click on "actual size" it doesn't come
out right when printing patterns, etc.  So
frustrating!

Thanks for any help or website that I can be
directed to.

Carrying on the Tradition

Spent Friday with my grandson helping him sew
"Trick or Treat" bags for himself and his brothers.
He did a fantastic job.  He was really happy how
they turned out.

His brother's were really excited
to get their bags.

Then in the afternoon I went with Kerri, Brian,
the grandkids and a couple of their friends to
the J&J's pumpkin patch to find the "perfect"
pumpkins.

Barely made it home in time to get ready to go to
Brian's for the neighborhood Halloween Carnival.

Hailey with her friends

Rob, Kerri and boys!

Hunting for pumpkins and attending the
Halloween Carnival are a tradition that we
have been doing since Hailey and Ian were
small.  It's really a great family outing and
the kids really look forward to this day each
year!

Girl in a Whirl!

Today while attending my Church meetings, this poem was shared as part of the lesson in Relief Society.  We all got quite a chuckle out of it.  Thought maybe some of you might enjoy it also.

The Girl in a Whirl
by ‘Dr. Sue’ (a.k.a. Vickie Gunther)

Look at me, look at me, look at me now!
You could do what I do
If you only knew how.
I study the scriptures one hour each day;
I bake, I upholster, I scrub, and I pray.
I always keep all the commandments completely;
I speak to my little ones gently and sweetly.
I help in their classrooms!  I sew all they wear!
I drive them to practice!  I cut all their hair!
I memorize names of the General Authorities;
I focus on things to be done by priorities.
I play the piano!
I bless with my talents!
My toilets all sparkle!
My checkbooks all balance!
Each week every child gets a one-on-one date;
I attend all my meetings (on time! Never late!)

I’m taking a class on the teachings of Paul,

But that is not all! Oh, no. That is not all .
I track my bad habits ’til each is abolished;
Our t-shirts are ironed!
My toenails are polished!
Our family home evenings are always delightful;
The lessons I give are both fun and insightful.
I do genealogy faithfully, too.
It’s easy to do all the things that I do!
I rise each day early, refreshed and awake;
I know all the names of each youth in my stake!
I read to my children!
I help all my neighbors!
I bless the community, too, with my labors.
I exercise and I cook menus gourmet;
My visiting teaching is done the first day!
(I also go do it for someone who missed hers.
It’s the least I can do for my cherished ward sisters.)
I chart resolutions and check off each goal;
I seek each “lost lamb” on my Primary roll.
I can home-grown produce each summer and fall.
But that is not all! Oh, no. That is not all .
I write in my journal!
I sing in the choir!
Each day, I write “thank you’s” to those I admire.
My sons were all Eagles when they were fourteen!
My kids get straight A’s!
And their bedrooms are clean!
I have a home business to help make some money;
I always look beautifully groomed for my honey.
I go to the temple at least once a week;
I change the car’s tires!
I fix the sink’s leak!

I grind my own wheat and I bake all our bread;
I have all our meals planned out six months ahead.
I make sure I rotate our two-years’ supply;
My shopping for Christmas is done by July!
These things are not hard;
’tis good if you do them;
You can if you try!
Just set goals and pursue them!
It’s easy to do all the things that I do!
If you plan and work smart, you can do them all, too!
It’s easy!” she said
and then she dropped dead.

Halloween Crafts!

Yeah!  My Halloween Banner is finished and up before
October 1!  And, gave Brian and Kerri's families theirs
so they can hang them.

Last evening for FHE, I presented a short lesson
before we worked on Making Halloween Spiders
from a kit I had purchased.

The grandkids really had fun and as you can see
above everyone is really concentrating on getting
those beads on the pipe cleaners for the spiders'
legs.

Hailey and Ian's finished Spiders!

Great Job ,Kohler!

After treats provided by my son Brian, each of the
kids got a Halloween Pencil, Window Clings and
"Scary Monster" straw for their drinks.  It also served
as a whistle.  Glad I didn't know this before hand.  A
lot of shrill noise going on around the house!

Great times!  Great Family!

A little Halloween Project

Yesterday while at Gardner Village with my friend,
JoAnn, we visited this wonderful store filled with
many delightful Halloween items.  I really wasn't
going to get any more decorations, but when I saw
this darling witch hat, I knew it was the perfect
addition to my Halloween table runner.

It makes me smile every time I look at it.  Not
sure what else I will put with it or if I will add
anything just yet.

Also finished my simple little table runner and
now they'll both be going on my kitchen table come
October 1.

Halloween banners are also done for me and
my kids that are stateside. Will give it tothem
when we get together Friday evening.  Will
post pictures then.

Now I just have to buttonhole around my
pumpkin hanging that will fit on my 12 inch stand
and then I think that will complete my projects
for this year's Halloween.

Sewing Lesson Two

In a previous post, I mentioned that my grandson wanted
to learn to sew.  This has been a lot of fun for me and
gives me some wonderful one on one time with my
grandsons.  Plural here because my five-year old
grandson is now involved in weaving.

For Ian's second lesson we made a pencil/notebook
folder following Jhoanna's tutorial.
Actually, I made a sample first to make sure this was
something he could do.  Easy peasy for him to do.
We added an elastic pony tail holder, cut off the metal,
made a loop and sewed it in one side seam.  Then
we sewed a button on the other side of the folder so
he could close it with the loop over the button.

While my daughter and I were working on our
Halloween Banner's a couple of days ago, Kohler
wanted a project to work on.  I pulled out my loom
and taught him how to weave and make a hot pad.

The finished project! He loves to set his cereal bowl
on it or his drink

Today while we finished our banners, he
made another one all by himself.

I love it that they enjoy learning and doing some
simple crafting projects.  And even more, that they
like doing it with Grandma!

Christmas Sewing

Today felt like a Christmas sewing day even though
I have all these Halloween projects waiting to be
completed.  Recently I had purchased the fabric
and pattern and hanger for a "ornament" shaped wall
hanging to make as a gift. It just kept calling to me.
So, I've spent the afternoon cutting and piecing it.

I really like the square and am thinking of possibly
making one for my table.  Decided I would let it
sit this evening while debating.  Then tomorrow I
can trim it and go look for backing and binding.
May just bind it in the darker of the greens.

I really love these quick and easy projects.

Sewing 101

My grandson, Ian, has been wanting to learn to sew.
And, today, was our day.  After a few brief instructions
about how to use the sewing machine, I started by
having him sew straight lines, squares, triangles,
squiggly lines and circles that I had drawn on paper
to get the feel of the sewing machine.  We didn't use
thread for this.  He really picked things up quickly.

Once he felt confidant with the paper sewing, he was
ready to sew on fabric.  I cut a few pieces and let
him practice sewing straight lines, etc.  Then we
took a small piece, folded it, sewed around three
sides, and turned it.  He was so excited because he
had made a little bag.

Feeling quite confidant, we moved on to a simple
little drawstring bag.

I was so proud of him and how well he did
sewing and turning his bag.

I had sewed one earlier to be sure it would
be easy enough for him to do.

Was so glad I did, because Kohler was feeling rather
left out and kept asking if he couldn't sew something.
Now they each have a little bag for their special
treasures.

Not sure what our next project will be, but
down the road, we may make Halloween
trick or treat bags and pillowcases as gifts
for his brothers for Christmas.

A Simple Little Runner

Today was a fun sewing day.  My friend, Jo Ann,
came down and we did a little sewing for Halloween,
hoping to get a jump start on things.

We were able to get the top for this
Simple Little Runner all pieced:

It was so nice to have the charm packs in our
stash.  Now just need to back it, machine quilt it,
add rick rack, binding and it will be already to
go.  So quick and easy!

August has really raced by for me.  I  sometimes
wonder what I have been doing.  But, I did get
my elementary school years finished for my
history which seemed to take forever.

Been trying to get a fall stitchery finished along
with sewing Halloween Banners for gifts.

August is filled with Birthdays of family and
friends.  Love being able to get together and
share this special time.  Just celebrated my
son's birthday.

Happy Birthday, Brian!

A Couple of Finishes

Yesterday I finished piecing the "Snowy Days" wall
hangings my daughter and I have been working on.

And, today added the border to my Schnibles, "Full
House".  I really like the blue dot sashing.

Now as soon as we purchase the backing for our
"Snowy Days" they will be ready to be quilted.
I'll have four little quilts for Myrna to quilt.

Feels good to have them all pieced!

Christmas Stitchery

Look what arrived in the mail today:

A few weeks ago I was one of the lucky
winners in Marg Low's "Christmas in July"
giveaway.  She was giving away four of
her new patterns and I won this adorable
"Deer Tree" stitchery.  I think it will make a
cute ornament, tag, or simple little decoration.

Included with the pattern was fabric, ribbon and
floss.  I can't wait to get started stitching.

Thank you so much Marg.

Happy Birthday!

I have been blessed to have an amazing older sister.
She is not only my only sibling, but she is my best
friend, confidant, teacher, and an awesome example.
Separated by several years and a few differences
as we grew up, we now have a wonderful bond.

I am so grateful our Heavenly Father has spared
her life and that she is still with us.  While she
and her husband were serving a mission in
Texas she had a heart attack and has had heart
problems ever since.

Plans were made for us to spend yesterday, the
7th, together.  I was going to drive down to her
home and we were planning to visit and go to
lunch and what-ever she might feel up to.  But
that all changed when I got a phone call about
8:00 a.m. saying she was in the hospital.

I spent the day with her and her husband while
they tried to regulate her heart.  Shocking it
three times did not do it.  But, I am happy to say
that about a hour after I left her heart settled
down to a normal rhythm.  No more 153 beats
a minute.

She was able to come home today and although
she is tired---very little sleep, she is doing well for
which I am so very grateful.

Happy Birthday to the best sister ever!  I can hardly
wait for our luncheon date.

Does anyone remember ----

Does anyone remember playing the game Mumbly-peg
when they were in elementary school?  I'm sure I am dating
myself by bringing this up.

Today I wrote a brief story for my history and thought I
would share it even if this isn't the final draft.

" Mumbly-peg is usually a game boys play, but not at our
school.   We girls enjoyed playing it as much as the boys
and often competed with them during recess.

Mumbly-peg is played with small pocket knives.  Two players
stand opposite of each other with their feet and legs together.
One person takes the point of his knife in his fingers and flips
the knife so it turns over once in the air and lands in the ground
near or a slight distance from the other person’s foot. The knife
was flipped from different parts of the body such as the elbow,
wrist, nose, chest, etc.   The point of the knife had to go into the
ground firmly enough so that the knife would stand without
falling over.  That person would then move one foot to the spot
where the knife had landed, keeping his other foot firmly planted
on the ground.  He would then bend down and pick up the knife,
making sure no part of his body except the feet touched the
ground.  If you did touch the ground, you automatically lost
the match.

We would take turns doing this until one or the other could
stretch no further without collapsing on the ground.   We often
found ourselves in some interesting contortions, before either
winning or conceding to our opponent.

We had such fun playing this game until one day when my
friend, Madelyn and I were playing the game during recess
and things took a turn for the worse.  I remember flipping
the point of my pocket knife towards Madelyn whose feet
were stretched out almost into a split position.  Instead of the
point going into the ground, the knife hit her near her eye.
The cut started to bleed and we rushed her into the school
nurse to be checked and to make sure her eye was ok.  I was
really scared.

I remember how upset and angry she was with me.  I had not
done it on purpose.  It was an accident.  I felt very bad.  Her
parents were called to come to the school to get her and take
her to the doctor to make sure everything was alright and
there was no damage to her eye.  I don’t recall if we were
reprimanded or not.  But the fear I felt and the sadness of
knowing I had hurt my friend and could have put her eye out,
was discipline enough for me.   I know that she still has a
scar as a reminder of our game that day.
I believe we were in about the 4th or 5th grade when this
took place.

I can’t believe we were allowed to bring knives, albeit small
pocket knives, to school.  Today, you would be suspended for
having a knife in your possession, your parents would be called
in, and who knows what other disciplinary procedures would
take place."

We live in such a different time now.  How innocent we were
back then and how much simpler life was.

Making Progress

I can't believe that the first week of August is over
already.  Time is flying by and I've got to step it
up if I want to get ahead of things for Christmas.  I
am making progress, however.  But first things first.

This week we celebrated my grandson's fifth
birthday with ice cream sandwiches.  He didn't
want cake!

---And, presents, of course!

Happy Birthday, Kohler!

I have also completed the four snowman blocks
and the four sled blocks for the wall hanging my
daughter and I are doing.  Now we just have
the snowflake blocks to do and then we can
assemble the top.

Today my daughter took all 96 of these home to
cut out:

This afternoon I was able to whip up a few of these
tissue holders.  They will be put in the Christmas
box for gifts to friends and co-workers that I like
to remember with a little something.

I really like Arlette's tutorial that I found. She teaches
you how to do a French Seam so there are no raw
edges.

In between sewing I have been working a history of
my years in elementary school and have been able
to connect up with three of my friends I went to
school with.  We've had a lot of fun reminiscing about
those good old school days!

And, on a final note, after 7 weeks the bandage
on my ear is finally off.  Yeah!  It feels so good
even if the skin is still a little tight.  But that
will change in time.  My Dr. just cautioned me to
avoid getting my ear boxed---so guess no boxing
matches for me!  lol

Getting Started!

My daughter and I decided to do a couple of
Christmas projects together, so I've been busy
cutting and sewing the last couple of days.  As it
is hard for her to find time to work on these
projects with three very active little boys, I
thought I'd get started.

I have cut 96 of these:

It really went quite fast as I layered the fabric and
used my rotary cutter and new rotating cutting
board.

Then I started sewing them in rows to be cut a
little later.  Hopefully, she will be able to help
with these in her spare (?) time!

Last November we picked up kits for a wallhanging
and planned on doing it after Christmas.  I did get
everything cut out in January, but then it has sat
for the last five months.  Today seemed like a good
day to work on the blocks while I was busy sewing
triangles.

Got the mittens all sewn together:

Tomorrow maybe I can finish sewing the triangles
and get a start on the snowmen after I get some
yard work done.

Two Finishes!

"Bertha" and "Domino" have been back from the
quilter for awhile and have just needed the binding
to complete them.  Haven't really felt up to it
until recently.  Decided it was now time to finish
them and cross them off my list.

I really wanted to hand quilt these, but knew I
would never get them done.  Was very pleased how
Myrna (my long-arm quilter) quilted them.

Love the little flower she quilted in the center of the
block --- and the simple design on the light colored
blocks.

Wonder if I could turn this over and use it in the
fall with some pumpkins, leaves, etc.?

Was very happy with the flower quilted in the
cream colored squares on "Bertha".  Myrna knows
I love anything with hearts and flowers in the
quilting.

This was such a fun little quilt to  piece.  Sorry it
doesn't show up very well.

Was excited to find this fun floral for the backing
that matched some of the colors on the front.

Now I just have to sew name and date on the backs
and they're done!

Tomorrow I'll share what I worked on later today----
getting a start on Christmas.
