Doing Some Prepping

Today I decided instead of piecing the top of my Valentine Mystery Quilt, I would do a little prepping on my January block for a Girl's Life since January is almost over.  Don't know if I'm getting slower or just paranoid about cutting the fabric incorrectly because I am only given so much and I don't know if I would be able to match or even find the fabric at my local quilt shop if I cut it wrong.  So, I measure with my ruler and then with the tape measure before I cut.  I also decided to watch the first tutorial on piecing the block and will watch the one on embroidering the piece another day.  But, I did get it all prepped and now the real work begins.

Since I embroider using a hoop, additional strips are added around the block and then will be removed when all the stitching is complete.

Also, got basket #6 traced and ready to be stitched.  So thankful for my light box.  It makes it so easy to trace the design.

Baskets four and five are now stitched.

Since we are supposed to get more snow tomorrow, I may decide to hibernate in my sewing room and piece the mystery quilt.  February is almost upon us and I would at least like the top to be done.  I may not get it quilted, but at least I can place it on my table and enjoy it.

  1. Hi Nola~

Cute! I love stitching, and I love the look of a stitched piece in a quilt! I had no idea that you could put fabric around a piece to make it easier to stitch...who knew?! I can't wait to see all of the pieces of the mystery quilt put together.

It has snowed all day here, and is suppose to snow and blow most of the night. I have to keep telling myself that it's only January!

    Enjoy your snow day!

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

    1. Thanks Barb. These BOM stitcheries will probably take me forever especially once the weather turns warm We've had snow again this morning, but only a skiff so it will melt off quickly.

  2. I love embroidery - reminds me of my grandmother. She was awesome at embroidery. I have done a bit years ago, but not lately. I should get back into it. I hope the snow stays up in the mountains. Have a good day.

    1. My mother also did beautiful embroidery and we were taught early on. In fact, I had a mutual teacher who encouraged us to bring something to work on while she gave the lesson. I'm sure it was to keep us quiet as we were quite a busy group of girls. Perhaps when you retire you will find a few minutes to embroidery.

    1. Thanks, Fiona. I don't feel quite so guilty sitting and sewing when it is snowy, cold and dreary outside.

  4. Oh, Nola, I’m loving that Girl'sLife block! I’m going to have to check into that one! It reminds me of some blocks I made years ago and never sewed together. When I get back up to the island, I’m going to have to dig it out and finish it up. Your baskets are sweet, too. Good luck finishing up your Valentine Mystery quilt. XO

  5. I hope you can find them. I've embroidered Sunbonnet Sue blocks before, but never anything this detailed. I see quite a few pictures of ladies who already have their quilt tops assembled and feel a little jealous. But, I'll get there.

  7. You do such beautiful work. I love the baskets and your mystery quilt will be beautiful, I am sure. I remember doing an embroidery with a hoop when I was a teenager. it wasn't complicated but this did bring a memory back.
    Blessings and hugs!
