Feeling Frustrated!

What you see isn't always what you get!

Have you ever found something in a magazine that
called to you?  And, you just knew you had to
make it!  Well, that was me and my friend.  We
saw this cute tote in a magazine and knew it was
something we wanted to do!

A day was spent shopping for the perfect fabric and
then it was off to my friends home to work on this
supposedly simple project.

Actually the cutting and piecing wasn't too bad,
just time consuming.  But, the frustration set in when
it came time to use "iron on pellon".  Grrrrr.
The pellon is supposed to adhere to the lining and then
quilted with the outside fabric.  It did not adhere and
puckered when we tried to quilt it.  We were not happy
campers!  There has to be something better out there!

Then the bag is folded in half and sewed leaving "raw"
edges on the inside of the bag.  No!  No!  Don't like
this at all.  So we made a little binding to cover the edges.
But, by adding this extra little thickness the bag corners
are very thick and stiff.

Really frustrated at this point!  But we kept plodding along.
Surely it would be ok when finished?  Was it worth the
frustration we were feeling?

My tote is now complete.  Am I happy with it?  Can't
decide.  Guess I just expected better!

  1. Hi Nola!

I would love to see it! I'll bet the tote is adorable! I'm sure you made improvements on the original directions. Maybe you should write to them and let them know how difficult it was, and what you did to make it easier - might help others too.

I really do get frustrated when directions say how easy something is, how you only need less than 2 tools to finish the job. When in reality, it is a very difficult task, and you have to go out and buy the tools to finish - yes, it has happened to me, unfortunately, more than once!!

    Have a great day!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  2. Nola, I've had the exact same thing happen to me a few different times. Don't get discouraged, not all bag patterns are so difficult and dissatisfying. I'll just bet it is really cute and can be functional in some way, either for yourself or someone else. I offer my prototypes to my friends all the time, and they love them, mistakes and all. They don't mind that they aren't perfect.~karen

  3. Hi--did you get the right iron on stuff???? there is soo many different ones out there!!!
I actually only sure a real stiff interfacing---and not an iron on one--I have trouble with the smell from the iron on ones and they are bulky to use!!!
But it does sound like all came out--do we get to see them????
    Hugs, Di
